Discounts

Discounts are the presets you pick by hand at the register: Military Discount, Birthday, whatever your house honors. Each is just a name and a value — a percentage or a flat amount. The automatic kind, where the register applies the deal itself, is a Checkout Rule; the two work side by side.

Settings → Sales & Payments → Discounts holds the list (managed with Sales Settings → Manage). A preset is name + Percent (%) or Amount + value, and an active toggle — pause one to pull it from the register without deleting it. A preset belongs to the studio you create it in.

A preset has no conditions, dates, or priority. Use Checkout Rules when a discount should apply automatically under specific conditions.

On an open cart, an undiscounted line’s menu offers Apply discount with the active presets. One discount per line — once one is on, the menu offers Remove discount instead; to swap, remove and re-apply. The line shows the discount by name and keeps the original price visible, and the name shows on the printed and web receipt.

Applying a preset only takes Checkouts → Edit, the same permission as editing the cart — the owner pre-approved the preset when they created it.

Below the presets sits Custom discount…: an ad-hoc percentage or amount with an optional name, for the situation no preset covers. This is the one gated by its own permission, Checkouts → Apply Custom Discount — it isn’t implied by any other checkout permission, and among built-in roles only Manager has it. A preset is a decision the owner already made; a custom discount is a decision being made at the register, and you choose who gets to make it.

How discounts interact with everything else

Section titled “How discounts interact with everything else”
  • Tax — whether tax computes before or after the discount is the tax rate’s setting.
  • Commission — a preset carries a commission basis: by default the artist’s commission is figured on the discounted total (artist shares the discount), or the studio can absorb it so the artist earns on full price. Custom discounts always share with the artist.
  • Checkout Rules — a line holds one discount, so a manual discount and an automatic rule compete for the slot: the larger one wins, and a rule only replaces your manual choice when it gives the customer strictly more. A manually-discounted line also sits out volume rules (“second piercing half off”) — it’s already specially priced, so it counts toward the sequence but doesn’t get discounted again.
